Palmer Biennale 2018, South Australia
This intervention occupies the site of the derelict miner’s cottage. A transparent fabric coat tightly encases the remains of its stone chimneybreast, while water filled bags fill the hearth and a white sand stencil traces the original footprint of the cottage.
This site offers the perfect platform for this memorial installation inspired by my ongoing research into the social, environmental and historical impacts of non-renewable mining. It explores the transience of mining communities highlighting the value of ‘home’, while emphasising water as our most precious natural resources.
