ABOUT SALLY
Sally Kidall is a site-responsive conceptual artist with a background in sculpture and interior architecture. Through her internationally recognised practice, she challenges the predictability of expectations and cultural homogeneity by constructing narrative-driven, metaphorical spaces and environments that respond to contemporary anxieties and insecurities.
She specialises in creating immersive, site-responsive environments that transcend the confines of traditional galleries, often as temporary or fictional constructions set in natural, built, or imagined subterranean landscapes. Her process combines conceptual research with illusory settings and sensory stimuli, integrating video projection, sound manipulations and scent, supported by website links and architectural drawings. This approach offers performative platforms for collaboration with interdisciplinary practitioners and encourages active audience participation.
All aspects of her work are informed by direct engagement with place and her enduring fascination with subterranean environments, both literal and fictional. A central thread currently evolving through her practice explores subterranean landscapes as metaphors for liminality, thresholds, suspension, ambiguity, incubation and transformation.
